Amsterdam, Netherlands

Cosy and compact it’s easy to forget Amsterdam is a capital city. Easy going, easy paced and, certainly, easy on the eye: this is a delightful place to explore by foot, by tram, by cycle, or canal barge.  With more than world-class forty museums and galleries, this is a city for art lovers, but it’s also much loved for its relaxed social scene, great eateries and its celebrated flower and produce markets.

When to go Dutch

Beautifully painted gabled buildings frame its waterways and pretty bridges and tramlines dissect the city’s cobbled streets and squares. Tulips and vibrantly coloured local flower kiosks make spring the definitive season in which to travel, but in any season Amsterdam has its appeal. Given the cold climate, Winter may seem least attractive, but the chilly season often coats the pretty city in snow giving it a fairytale appearance, city centre squares are flooded to make temporary skating rinks and Christmas markets add their own festive cheer.
