Ecuador and The Galapagos

Ecuador – Four different ‘worlds’ in one.

A visit to Ecuador offers at least four distinctly different opportunities:

• A historical and culturally rich city experience in Quito,

• Close-up observation of the wonderful biodiversity to be found on the Galapagos Islands,

• An Amazonian experience which combines the majesty of the jungle with a relaxing spa,

• Andean region experiences that surprise visitors because of the beautiful and mystical landscape, with peaks over 5,000 metres of altitude.

It would be possible to craft a holiday itinerary to combine two, three or four of these elements creating a rich range of memories all within this magical South American country.

Recently Sandra travelled with Tour Operator Exsus, to experience three of these elements, embarking on a nine-day adventure that she will never forget. Sandra flew into Quito via Madrid spending two nights in Quito before heading on a 4-day small ship cruise around the Galapagos Islands. She returned to Quito for a further night before returning home. During her visit she was also able to learn about the Amazonian experience from fellow cruisers who had taken this option and see for herself the beauty of the Andes while travelling through the region.

This account presents her personal highlights.

Ecuador: Ecuador sits on the equator with the spectacular Andean Mountain range running right through the country. It is a year-round destination, with seasonal weather varying more with altitude than with time of year. The dry season on the coast is between May and December, and between June and September in the Andean regions.

Jungle regions always have the chance of rain, but the wettest months are between April and September.

The Galapagos Islands are a fantastic year-round destination, with something different to see whatever time of year you go. Winds pick up between July and mid-October and sea temperature is slightly lower.

Quito: Is known as “The City of Eternal Spring” because of its beautiful climate that gets cool at night and warm during the day. There is always the possibility of an occasional light rain shower (7-25 ◦C). At 2,800 metres above sea level Quito is one of the highest cities in South America. Surrounded by plunging valleys and snow-peaked volcanoes, the magnificent Andean treasures outside the city are rivalled only by the colonial magnificence within. In its fascinating “Old Town” Sandra found architectural splendour, ancient churches, historic theatres, and traditional markets. She described it as a “people watchers paradise” while navigating the labyrinth of narrow streets. More contemporary was Quito’s “New Town,” dotted with cafes, bars, and trendy restaurants.

Accommodation in Quito: While in Quito Sandra stayed at the Illa Experience Hotel in the historic “Old Town.” This award winning, luxury boutique hotel occupies a historic colonial mansion in the creative San Marco neighbourhood.

The hotel seeks to embellish its guests with Ecuadorian and South American traditions, culture, and benefits. The hotel ethos is to transform mentalities; to transform the way people live and feel the old town of Quito. The beautifully restored and appointed rooms, traditional interior courtyard and spectacular views from the roof-top bar all made this the perfect location to explore the “Old Town.”

Experiences in Quito

History: Sandra would recommend visiting Independence Square or “Plaza Grande” which is surrounded by important historic buildings followed by a visit to the Iconic La Compania de Jesus church which dates to the 17th century and is considered one of the most beautiful baroque churches in South America. A trip up to the enormous Virgin of the Panecillo statue on the hill that overlooks all of Quito also generates a unique view of the city.

Food: With its varied climate of coast, highlands and rainforest, Ecuador’s cuisine is rich and varied. Hearty dishes feature soup, stews, rice, beans, and potatoes (an Ecuadorian staple, hundreds of varieties of potato are grown in the Andes). Chicken, beef, pork, and guinea pig are eaten plus of course excellent fish and seafood, especially the famous ceviche. Sandra enjoyed discovering Ecuadorian gastronomy taking part in a cookery class at one of the most popular local restaurants.

Chocolate Tasting: One of the highlights for Sandra was taking part in a Gastronomic Tour of Cacao, Wine, and Spirits. This was a taster menu provided by one of the “New Town” restaurants with each course paired with a wine, rum or mezcal plus a different intensity of the rich, dark chocolate that Ecuador is famous for. Experiencing how the chocolate could smooth the alcohol and enhance the taste of the food was a new experience – both informative and enjoyable – she would highly recommend trying this.

Market Culture: No trip to Quito would be complete without experiencing one of the Indigenous markets. If you have time take the 1.5-hour journey to one of the biggest at Otavalo. Here you will be dazzled by the colourful array of textiles, including the famous ponchos, as well as handicrafts, jewellery, and other artisanal craftwork.

Middle of the World Experience: About 30km north of Quito lies the equator line that divides the northern and southern hemispheres. The site has a museum with interesting interactive displays to help you understand the influence of the equator. Worth a visit as the guides also explain about ancient amazonian life including hunting with blowpipes and why head shrinking was popular among certain tribes at one specific time.

The Galapagos Islands

Sandra flew into Baltra Airport in the Galapagos from Quito, before transferring to the M/C Endemic. The Galapagos Islands is THE wildlife experience in South America. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Galapagos is an archipelago of volcanic islands formed six million years ago. Since the animals in the Galapagos have never experienced man as a predator, visitors can get amazingly close to the many wonderful species found here.

MS Endemic

The M/C Endemic is a luxury catamaran designed for an intimate cruising experience in the Galapagos Islands, accommodating up to sixteen guests with a nearly one-to-one crew ratio. The crew contains naturalists who accompany the guests on all excursions. Sandra enjoyed a 4-night cruise that covered six of the main islands and allowed her to see many of the amazing species present. Guests go ashore via rubber Pangas and take part in both dry and wet landings. Once ashore hikes across moderate terrain allow guests to get up close and personal with the amazing wildlife. Sandra also took part in snorkelling activities with spectacular fish and sea lions and kayaking. One benefit compared to larger ships that sail within the region, is that the Endemic crew can respond quickly to maximise wildlife opportunities. When a humpback whale with a calf was spotted in the distance, the crew were able to adapt the schedule and take in that unexpected opportunity to see these wonderful creatures breaching from the water. Sandra felt very privileged to witness this from close hand. Onboard there were short nature briefings each evening before dinner to prepare guests for the next day’s activities. Dining on the Endemic is comparable to a high-end hotel restaurant, with a wide-ranging menu of delicious international cuisine served up by the onboard chef.

Why not finish your adventure with an Amazonian Spa experience?

While onboard Sandra took the opportunity to talk to fellow guests who had taken the opportunity to do a three-day Amazonian experience before travelling down to the Galapagos. These guests had decided to do the Quito experience after the Galapagos. They were very enthusiastic about the Eco Lodge concept. The accommodation is in chalets each with a beautiful view of the pristine Amazon Forest. The stay ensures picture postcard sunrises and sunsets. Naturalists supervise early morning and early evening adventures into the jungle via motorised canoes and on foot. When back at the central Lodge guests can also relax and engage in spa treatments.

Sandra’s recommendation however would be to experience Quito first, then the Galapagos and finally the Amazon. The combination of peaceful tranquillity and spa treatments would be an ideal way to rejuvenate before heading home.

Antarctica has long occupied a p lace on many travellers’ bucket lists, and I was fortunate enough to experience this extraordinary destination first-hand with Quark Expeditions, sailing aboard their impressive expedition ship, the World Explorer. From the moment we set sail to the final moments among the icebergs, this journey was truly unforgettable.

The World Explorer: Comfort and Capability

The World Explorer is purpose-built for polar exploration, accommodating 125 staff and crew alongside 172 guests. This guest limit is significant: Antarctic regulations mean that ships with fewer than 200 guests can make unrestricted landings on the Antarctic Peninsula. Ships carrying between 200 and 500 guests face landing restrictions, while those with over 500 guests are not permitted to make landfall at all. This ensures a more intimate, flexible, and immersive experience for everyone on board.

The ship itself is extremely comfortable, with spacious balcony cabins that allow guests to soak up the scenery in privacy. Dining is open and relaxed, with buffet breakfasts and lunches, and a set meal in the evening. The food was consistently of a very high standard, and the casual atmosphere made it easy to mingle with fellow explorers.

Setting Sail from Ushuaia: The Drake Passage

Our adventure began in Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina in Tierra del Fuego. The “Crossing The Circle” expedition takes around three days to reach the Antarctic Peninsula, crossing the infamous Drake Passage. This stretch of ocean is renowned for its unpredictable conditions—travellers either experience the “Drake Shake” (rough seas) or the “Drake Lake” (calm waters). We encountered the former on our outward journey and the latter on our return. Thankfully, the ship’s doctor was on hand with complimentary sea-sickness tablets, ensuring everyone could enjoy the crossing. During these days at sea, the anticipation built as we attended informative briefings in the ship’s auditorium. Topics ranged from whale spotting to the correct way to embark a zodiac, ensuring everyone was well-prepared for the adventures ahead.

Protecting Antarctica: Biosecurity and Preparation

A crucial aspect of Antarctic travel is biosecurity. In the main lounge, staff conducted thorough biodiversity checks to prevent any contamination of this pristine environment. Passengers brought all their equipment—backpacks, gloves, Velcro straps—to be meticulously vacuumed and cleaned. This process is essential to protect the fragile Antarctic ecosystem.

Landfall: Stepping onto the Antarctic Peninsula

The highlight of the expedition was undoubtedly making landfall. Before disembarking, we visited the “Mud Room” to change into the boots and coats provided. Boots were disinfected before stepping into the zodiacs, further ensuring no contamination was brought ashore.

The expedition team always landed first, marking out safe walking routes with cones and flags to avoid disturbing penguin colonies or other wildlife. The sight of zodiacs lined up on the shore, with the ship in the distance and penguins milling about, is one I’ll never forget.

Zodiac Excursions: Up Close with Antarctica’s Wonders

Each day offered a full programme of excursions—zodiac cruises and landings in both the morning and afternoon. These ten-passenger zodiac boats, expertly piloted by the expedition team, brought us close to shipwrecks, breaching whales, and towering glaciers. Most sailings were smooth, though the first day’s choppy waters provided a true sense of adventure! One of my most vivid memories is watching the zodiacs criss-cross the bay, framed by icebergs and glaciers. It was in these moments that I put my camera away and simply appreciated how lucky I was to be there.

Life Onboard: Relaxed Luxury and Camaraderie

Life on the World Explorer was relaxed and sociable. The open dining encouraged conversation, and the casual atmosphere made it easy to connect with fellow travellers from around the world. Antarctic expeditions attract curious, adventurous souls, and sharing stories with new friends became one of the most rewarding aspects of the journey.

A Voyage to the Last Frontier: Exploring Antarctica with Oasis Portfolio

Antarctica, the last unspoiled wilderness on earth, has always captured the imagination of adventurers and explorers. Recently, Mark Davidson from Oasis Portfolio, had the privilege of joining Quark Expeditions’ ‘World Explorer’ on a once-in-a-lifetime voyage to this magnificent continent. Read on as Mark shares his insights, experiences, and reflections from this unforgettable journey.

The journey began in Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world and the gateway to Antarctica. After a tour of the Tierra del Fuego National Park, the group boarded the ‘World Explorer’, which was to be their home for the next few days. The ship, accommodating 172 guests and 125 staff and crew, was spacious, modern, and comfortable, with the most popular common area being the Observation Lounge on Deck 7, offering a bar and breath-taking views of the picturesque landscape.

During the two full days crossing the Drake Passage, the guests received numerous briefings in the ship’s auditorium, covering everything from wildlife spotting to safety measures during landings and destination-specific lectures. One of the most critical preparations was the biodiversity checks, performed in the main lounge to ensure that no contamination was brought onto land, leaving particles that could affect the ecosystem. Passengers were responsible for bringing all equipment for checking, and staff thoroughly disinfected tripods, backpacks, and other equipment, to do their part in conserving this icy haven.

As one of the few itineraries to cross the Antarctic Circle, the trip was a celebration of sorts, and a party was held in the Observation Lounge when the ship crossed the line. The atmosphere on board the ship was fantastic, with well-trained staff keeping everyone informed, entertained, and inspired.

One of the highlights of the journey was making landfall on the Antarctic Peninsula. The expedition team was the first to make landfall to mark out the walking route, using cones and red flags to prevent stumbling into a penguin colony. The place was breathtakingly beautiful, but also a wild place subject to weather changes at the last minute, so guests ought to be prepared to brave the elements when necessary.

Antarctica is a wonderfully neutral space, where peace on earth can truly be found. The fact that it’s not owned by any one country, thanks to the treaty of 1959, makes it a unique destination. During the voyage, Mark had the opportunity to appreciate its unspoiled beauty and encounter its rich and diverse wildlife, including penguins, whales, and seals.

Finally, Mark highlighted the quality of food and accommodation on the ‘World Explorer’. The buffet-style breakfast and lunch were top-notch, while the set meals in the evening were exceptional. Mark was also treated to a stay in a Veranda Suite, which was spacious, modern, and comfortable, making the voyage all the more enjoyable.

In conclusion, this adventure to Antarctica with Quark Expeditions was an incredible experience that Mark will cherish for a lifetime. From the spectacular scenery to the fascinating wildlife, it was an adventure that exceeded expectations in every way. Falling for Africa

Follow that!

I visited in the Victoria Falls Hotel which boasts wonderful views of the Falls and the pretty railway bridge nearby. I can just imagine War Veterans dining at this hotel in full dress uniform, the hotel is something of an institution in the region and staff make up for any perceived lack of high tech modern facilities with cheerfully friendly service. If you want something a little more upscale another great option is the Royal Livingstone in Zambia, also on the on the banks of the Zambezi River, just upstream from the mighty Victoria Falls, is excellent.

Most people come to this part of Africa for the wildlife experiences and my favourite Attenborough moment was just ahead. When I checked into the Old Drift Lodge , also in Zimbabwe, I was delighted to find myself in a modern, well-equipped and luxuriously designed villa with indoor and outdoor shower and a bath overlooking the Zambezi River, but my abiding memory of this resort will be getting up on my first morning to see an elephant drinking from my private pool!

After two nights and several fascinating game drives we transferred by road (around 75 minutes’ drive time) and passed through via immigration at the Botswana border heading towards our next stop; to Chobe Game Lodge in the Chobe National Park, Serondela. This was the only road transfer on the trip – all others were by private plane which seems very glamorous, but is a practical option considering the large distances between our destinations.

This is a stunning base from which to explore the wonders of this huge national park and fantastic ‘up close and personal’ views of all sorts of big game and wildlife are almost guaranteed.

Chobe Game Lodge is an elegant, five-star, fully Ecotourism-certified safari lodge and the only property located inside the world-renowned park and set on the banks of the famous Chobe River. Guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in an all-encompassing safari on land and water in one of Africa’s primary wildlife destinations as the Chobe Game Lodge staff share their passion and knowledge about the diversity of Botswana’s Chobe National Park.

Accommodation is excellent throughout, with rooms, suites and villas all well-equipped and tastefully designed. Every one of the 44 elegantly designed guest rooms are air-conditioned, with en-suite bathroom and a large terrace facing the Chobe River. The Chobe Game Lodge is the Largest of the Desert And Delta properties in Botswana, but also had a certain charm, that is difficult to describe until you are actually there !

Creature comforts well catered for, most guests are delighted to explore the national park in the company of the Chobe Lodge guides. Game drives and languid river cruises provide ample opportunities to see thrilling wildlife in their natural habitat, while the evident enthusiasm and expertise of the guides mean that, on this holiday, every day is a school day. We saw all of the “Big 5” and some added extras – we even spotted the elusive Honey Badger which, we are told, is pound for pound the toughest animal in the wild

There are so many properties it is difficult to update on them all !

We flew with South African Airways via Johannesburg which proved an easy connection with Aer Lingus in Terminal at London Heathrow. On arrival in Victoria Falls you have to purchase a visa at $35 – a slow and slightly antiquated process, but this is Africa, and who’s in a rush anyway?

To the Moon and Back: Julie-Anne’s experience onboard Silver Moon

I was first introduced to Silversea on my Honeymoon 15 years ago and have been fortunate enough to sail with them many times since. Having not been on a cruise ship for nearly 2 years, you can imagine my excitement when I was given the opportunity to join a small fam trip onboard Silver Moon sailing out of Athens, around the Greek islands. With the Moon now being the largest of their fleet, with a capacity of 596 passengers and 411 crew, I couldn’t wait to get onboard.

Obviously, things are slightly different now with travel and a lot more information needs to be added in advance. I ensured I had all necessary documentation, including copies of my COVID Vaccination Certificate, which I uploaded to the Silversea website, then I was ready to go!

On arrival in Athens, I received a warm welcome by a Silversea transfer and was whisked off to the port to check in. An antigen test was taken, and my documents were reviewed, while I waited for my result.

Upon boarding, I was presented with a glass of champagne, and it was like being home again.

I headed to my Suite, where our butler was waiting for us. He started by offering us our choice of amenities, then took our choice of drinks for the mini bar, before explaining any further health and safety information. This included advising us that every morning we were required to have our temperature checked and all we had to do was page him and he would pop down to do so.

The suites are similar to the Silver Muse and the decor has a beautiful light, contemporary feel to it. A few more technical advancements were on show, with a notepad device which charges your phone being very useful and everything you need to view being on your TV, such as the safety drill. Whilst walking around the ship the first thing I noticed was how spacious it was and there were so many nooks and crannies you could find to relax on your own.

The pool deck was fantastic with new modern sun loungers and great day beds. The pool seemed larger with an expansive ledge where you can just sit and cool down without having to get in to the pool.

The pool staff are as usual fabulous and are happy to assist with anything you want.

If you’re hungry whilst at the pool you can nip to Spaccanopoli for a pizza (one of the best pizzas at sea I will confirm) or just the pool menu which ever you prefer.

On this cruise shore excursions were included so most people were off during the day. We visited Syros, Paxos and Patmos which were very pretty. As of next year, Silversea are including Complementary Shore excursions and door to door transfer.

Another amazing addition on the Silver Moon is the S.A.LT Lab experience where you learn to cook, it was great fun cooking my Mousaka, and from someone who doesn’t normally cook, I think I’m ready for Masterchef…

Thankfully what we cooked wasn’t served in the S.A.L.T (sea and land taste) in the evening.There are so many choices for dining and most you can reserve in advance and only La Dame and Kasieaki have a small surcharge.After dinner there is a host of venues to go to, either a show, which we had opera one evening and a tribute to the Beatles the next evening or just relax and listen to the amazing Jazz singer at Silver note, or take part in a little karaoke or dancing at Panorama Lounge, as there have been some very late nights there.

A lot of people have the perception that Silversea is for older clients and very formal, but it is far from that. It is for people who like good food and wine and enjoy being well looked after. It is as formal or informal as you wish it to be. It has a very relaxed atmosphere on board.

I have confidence selling Silversea as I know my clients will be well looked after and not be disappointed. Once they sail with Silversea they generally rebook again.

My question is not why book Silversea, but why not book Silversea?

Magic Carpet Contrasts, From Istanbul To Mauritius

As long-haul destinations have grown in popularity an increasing number of travellers are opting to break their journeys with a swift stop in a mid-way destination. It adds a different dimension to a vacation and, as I discovered on a recent trip to Mauritius via Istanbul, a blend of city and silver-sanded paradise adds up to perfection!

When you travel long-haul the choice of airline is all the more important – you’ll be spending plenty of time in the plane, after all. I travelled Economy with Turkish Airlines which boasts one of the youngest fleet of aircraft in the industry and I was particularly impressed with the levels of comfort and standards of service en route from Dublin to Istanbul.

In Istanbul I had the opportunity to get an insider’s view of how airline staff train to deliver that exemplary service. I visited the state of the art training headquarters for Turkish Airlines. From food preparation and service to emergency service procedures, this is where the staff of Turkish Airlines (and others, for the facility is used by other major airlines) hone their skills. In every area of training students must attain a pass rate of at least 95%; it’s a tough remit but one that reinforces the high standards of Turkish Airlines.

My high point of the visit was getting the opportunity to land a plane (thankfully a simulated exercise!) in a tropical rainstorm. Lest said, the better, I fear. The simulated flight facility is central to pilot training and all pilots/co-pilots must successfully complete this aspect of training every six months.

While that aspect of my Istanbul visit was very definitely a specialist invitation for travel trade only, there is no shortage of attractions for the curious traveller in this great city.

Istanbul , formerly known as Constantinople is still acclaimed as ‘The Queen of Cities’, the crossroads of Europe and Asia . Overlooking the Bosphorus Strait, the city reflects the many influences which have shaped its often tumultuous history and many of its major visitor attractions are – very understandably – world class. In the Sultanahmet district you will see marvellous Egyptian obelisks and the open-air Roman-era Hippodrome ich was for centuries the site of chariot races. Don’t miss the fantastically gorgeous Sultan Ahmed or ‘Blue’) Mosque and The iconic Byzantine Hagia Sophia which features a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaics. Check out the Spice and Grand Bazaars … and that’s just for starters. It would take many weeks to do justice to the main tourist attractions of this fabled city, but it is possible to pack a lot into a short stopover stay … bring comfortable shoes is my advice!

I stayed at historical 4 star Sultanhan Hotel in the heart of the Sultan Ahmet area, perfect for sight-seeing – and that convenience is extra-important if time is limited. All very comfortable with airy, traditional-style décor and good food.

After just a day, it was off to Istanbul Airport (amazing shopping!) and a taste of ramped up luxury in the award-winning Turkish Airlines Business Lounge … a split level affair with a golf area, Scalextric Track, a grand piano, plus a wonderful selection of food and fabulous wash room facilities including showers and amenities. Talk about livin’ the dream!

It was a relaxed preparation for an eleven hours onward flight to the laid back luxe of Mauritius. This was my first time in Mauritius which really is like an ad for hair shampoo or Bounty Bars!

Expect waving palms, soft white sands and turquoise waters, with near-perfect weather. The climate in Mauritius is largely tropical and hotels are designed to allow guests to take full advantage of the wonderful weather and fabulous beaches. Water sports facilities abound and I would recommend taking one of the super full day Catamaran Cruises. It’s worth exploring on land too, and no visit is complete without a trip to the island’s capital, Port Louis which was a lot more built up and modern than I had imagined, but endowed with some super craft markets.

I would suggest taking a tripto Sacred Lake, the crater lake tucked away in the secluded mountain area in Savanna, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is considered the most sacred Hindu place in Mauritius and many pilgrims still walk bare footed from their homes to worship at the shores of this lovely lake.

While the destination is considered very chic and high end, I was surprised to discover that there is an excellent range of accommodation to suit a variety of budgets.

The 3 star Coin De Mire on the north coast is one of the respected Attitude properties, with a warm and friendly atmosphere. It is not a beach-front property and you do have to cross a busy road to reach the shoreline, but what a beach! Truly beautiful with wonderful views all around. The hotel would be perfect for a young couple on a budget. Its split level rooms circle a pretty, shaded pool area and there is a small spa facility. Choices in the small restaurant may be limited but the food is good and the outdoor bar area features a local singer each night and the ambiance is really relaxed and pleasant.

Another 3 star choice is the Friday Attitude where management proudly claim that ‘Every day feels like a Friday’. Great beachfront location and a lovely open bar-and-relax area make this an attractive choice for people who prefer a ‘non-stuffy’ set up. Great spot for families travelling with kids too.

The Belle Mare Plage by Constance is situated on one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. This resort-style hotel has recently been refurbished to wonderfully high standards and offers Half Board or All Inclusive. Its Prestige Rooms which can sleep 2 adults and 1 child under 12, have pool entrance and are on the ground floor. The Junior Suite, Suite Deluxe can adjoin with the prestige rooms which is a great advantage if you are travelling with a larger family or even if you just want more space. The Belle Mare also offers villa accommodation with private pools. Facilities in this hotel are excellent, especially for families: a complimentary children’s club for 4 – 11 years and, for older teens (and young at heart adults!) there is a vast array of watersports activities along with good sports facilities including tennis, table tennis, mountain biking and golf. Indeed there are two 18-hole championship golf courses right here. There are also thirteen dining options to choose from – all of them offering excellent food in a variety of styles.

The 5 star Shangri-La Le Toussrock is just wow! There are great facilities here for kids and teens but, to my mind, this is a perfect couples’ retreat. It has a tastefully sophisticated décor throughout with a distinctly japanese/zen vibe plus a stunning spa facility. Imagine yourself enjoying superb food as you sit outdoors, overlooking an impossibly blue lagoon, with two beautiful islands, exclusively available to Le Touessrok guests … you’re getting the picture!

The 5 star Heritage Awali is a particularly well-known hotel with a tribal/African flavour and shady interiors. Its outdoor barbeque area surrounded by gardens is, perhaps, its major claim to fame. Baby-sitting services, kids and teens clubs, together with a good range of sports and water activities, make it popular with families.

Just a short buggy transfer away the 5 star, Heritage Le Telfair was my preferred choice from the Heritage Group. I loved its grand colonial entrance with bright lobby, beautiful fresh flowers around and welcoming homely atmosphere. Le Telfair has a wonderful selection of restaurants and bars, a variety of land and water activities plus guests enjoy access to the chic C Beach Club which has two restaurants, a swimming pool and beach area.

The 5 star Le Prince Maurice Constance provided a romantic conclusion to my trip to Mauritius, a truly special hideaway in the North-Eastern corner of the island where unashamed grandeur is the name of the game. Service was beyond fabulous and I couldn’t have chosen a better spot than its wonderful bar in which to dance away my final evening in magical Mauritius … made even better by the fact that it happened to be my birthday! I just hope someone will give me a return trip as next year’s present!

Magnificent Montana

Go West, young man! Our wannabe cowboy Gary Boyd got a taste for The Great Outdoors and western adventure when he travelled to the amazing Resort at Paws Up in Montana as guest of Azure Luxury Collection.

Stretching from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains, Montana is famous for its stunning unspoilt scenery and wide-open spaces. The vistas here are breath-taking, from its snow-capped peaks, lapis lakes and unspoilt wilderness to dramatic forests teaming with wildlife. The key words here are ‘untamed, wild and natural’ and those lucky enough to live in Montana take real pride and pleasure in the beauty and diversity of their surroundings. Those lucky enough to visit will make memories that will last a lifetime.

The Resort At Paws-Up is the perfect place to kindle your Montana love affair. Paws Up is a 37,000-acre working Montana ranch. Located in the heart of the picturesque Blackfoot Valley, the history of the ranch dates back to the homesteader days of the late 1800s, while the history of the land goes back even farther to the time when the Blackfoot River served as a transportation corridor for Nez Perce, Flathead and Blackfeet Indians and later for fur trappers, miners and loggers.

Today the expansive property is a haven for authentic dude ranch Montana activities, like trail rides, cattle drives and chuck wagon dinners, part of a vast menu of wilderness adventures, or you can try your hand at fly-fishing on the legendary Blackfoot River (10 miles of which flow through the Ranch), rappelling down cliffs, white-water rafting, or clay pigeon shooting. This is the ultimate, authentic, adventure park for families with a host of child-friendly activities, but it is also very much a working farm. In addition to more than 300 head of resident elk, you’ll also see a couple of hundred Black Angus cows roaming the rolling pastures of the ranch.

Activities such as horse riding, cattle drives, rope courses, white water rafting fishing and quad biking, sumptuous in-room spa treatments, winter ice skating and snow mobiles all come at a charge, but each delivers a truly memorable holiday experience. The resort has great walking trails and staff will happily make up pack lunches and give you GPS units and phones for the day … this is wilderness, after all!

My ‘Wilderness Home’ came with fully equipped kitchen, open fires, hot tub … even mountain bikes! The resort is all inclusive, with a cheery bar and three excellent restaurants but if you want to use your private BBQ or eat in your home or tent they will provide everything you need to cook and cater for yourself. As a helpful touch you can have your fridge stocked with your choice of drinks and they even deliver pizza.

Every home or tent is allocated a car and, from March 2020, those will be 7-seater Lexus Jeeps.

The weather in Montana is famously changeable. I enjoyed balmy ‘Indian Summer’ temperatures on my end of September trip, but the following Sunday the resort got nine inches of snow! Paws-Up is the perfect place to enjoy any, or every, time of the year and many guests return again and again to appreciate that seasonality, absorbing nature’s richness is Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

I flew from Heathrow to Seattle (9 hours on the way out and just 8 hours 15 mins on the way back!) and spent a little time enjoying that great city before heading off to Paws-Up.

Seattle is a great destination in itself, easy and enticing to explore on foot. I stayed in the super-convenient Sheraton , enjoying the amenities of The Club Rooms so, by the time I transferred to Missoula, Montana (80 minutes away) I was already in relaxed holiday mood.

Seattle isn’t the only stop over option you can connect via Chicago, LA or San Francisco as a first and fascinating step on this authentic American experience.

Paradise Awaits In Mauritius

Close your eyes … relax … and think of a paradise island. You’re probably conjuring up an image remarkably like real-life Mauritius. This wonderful Indian Ocean destination, known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs, is the perfect embodiment of fantasy paradise as Mark Davidson from our Howard Street (Belfast) Portfolio Suite recently discovered when he lived the dream with destination experts, Lusso.

Flight time from London is a potentially daunting twelve hours but, with the prospect of paradise awaiting the journey’s end, that needn’t put you off, particularly if you opt to overnight in London or choose a relaxing airline upgrade.

Luxury is the theme in this destination and most holidaymakers want to kick back and relax, enjoying sandy white beaches and the warm Indian Ocean whose water temperature rarely drops below a delightful 23°C (73°F), but it’s also well worth connecting with some of the island’s other attractions.

The capitol, Port Louis, is small but vibrant and interesting to explore, noted for its lively Central Market and Craft Market, its lush Botanic Gardens and the thrilling Champ de Mars racecourse.

In 2017 CNN and The Telegraph voted Port Louis one of the greatest cities in the world for street food, so don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a taste of local cuisine either going it alone or joining one of the excellent ‘foodie’ guided tours.

It’s easy and relatively inexpensive to hire a car and guide and this is a great way to get a feel for Mauritius or hire quadbikes for a memorable day in the island’s mountainous interior at Black River Gorges National Park, with its expanse of rainforest, dramatic waterfalls, hiking trails and wildlife.

Mauritius is fantastic for water sports and experiences, with snorkelling a major attraction. Timid in the water? See the stunning coral reefs teaming with sealife from the comfort of a glass bottom boat or don a diving helmet for a no-skills-needed underwater ‘sea walk’.

Visitors can choose from a wide selection of island ‘experiences’ and tours and most pick up direct from hotels. Some experiences even come to you, such as the Mauritius photography sessions which provide a talented professional snapper to record your magical Mauritius experiences.

The St. Regis Mauritius Resort at Le Morne Beach was one of my favourites, with elegant, airy suites. Upgrade for ocean views, 4-poster beds and/or separate living areas or choose a gorgeous 4-bedroom villa with private pool and garden. The hotel has 2 bars and 6 restaurants, spa, gym and kids’ play area, as well as an outdoor pool, water sports and direct beach access. This is a relatively new hotel resort, but it has a wonderful aged colonial feel similar to Reid’s in Madeira. Public areas are spacious and immaculately maintained and the staff are very welcoming.

The Heritage Awali is a great choice for families and couples. Set on 2,500 beachfront hectares with a nature reserve, this luxe all-inclusive resort has well-equipped rooms with African accents and all mod cons. Upgraded rooms add ocean views or direct beach access, and beachfront suites have whirlpool tubs and sofabeds – or opt for a 3-bedroom villa with kitchen and private pool. There are 12 restaurants and 8 bars, plus 24/ room service, a stunning spa, beautifully landscaped pool and golf course.

Set on its own peninsula, the Constance Prince Maurice has a great get-away-from-it-all feel. Set on 60 hectares of gardens overlooking the ocean, the hotel facilities are artfully housed in buildings with thatched roofs. Villas add whirlpool tubs, and some have private pools while others stand on stilts over a fishing reserve. There are super al fresco dining options including a floating seafood restaurant and poolside bars. There’s also a spa, an outdoor pool and a private beach, as well as 2 golf courses.

The wonderful Luxe Belle Mare is set on a beach; a stand-out family property, bright and welcoming and packed with facilities which include a spa, a heated outdoor pool with a kids’ section, and a private beach, as well as play areas for young children and teenagers. The bright and welcoming hotel showcases the celebrated flair of its interiors designer, Kelly Hoppen and its excellent dining options include elegant Indian and Chinese restaurants, a cafe, bars and a beachfront eatery.

The fabulous One & Only Le Saint Geran is all about all-out luxury and no detail escapes its vigilant management team. Here, perfection is the name of the game and your only problem will be deciding which of the sumptuously presented rooms or suites to choose. The grounds are every bit as fabulous and every well-placed lounger seems to capoture a view straight out of a glossy travel magazine.

Compact and easily navigated, the resort successfully blends exclusivity with a friendly laid-back atmosphere. Dining options range from casual beach barbeques to stylish sushi, mouth-watering steaks and fabulously presented local cuisine

Le Touessrok is situated on a white-sand beach along the Indian Ocean, just 10km from the beautiful Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club. Rooms and suites have ocean view balconies or terraces, while upgraded suites provide private pools, and extras such as complimentary breakfast and cocktails. Beach villas have infinity pools and butler service. Dining options include Japanese, Indian and beachfront eateries and the resort has its own friendly bar with a lively atmosphere. Having enjoyed my stay there my tip would be to book Hibiscus Wing which is sheltered from the prevailing breezes and opens onto a sizzling stretch of palm-fringed beach.

Every trip produces a hidden gem and for me it was 20 Degrees South (20 Degrès Sud) on the north of the island, just across the peninsula from Grand Baie with a free boat shuttle to the town. With only 36 rooms, this uniquely stylish and charming Relais & Chateaux property would be ideal for couples or honeymooners after something boutique and personal.

Washington DC’s Capitol Attractions

Kate Gilliland flew into the US capitol recently to get a taste of life in the fast lane and discovered a surprisingly relaxed vibe in a city that’s now her new favourite American destination.

Travelling as guest of British Airways, Blue Insurance and Laser Travel she also discovered the benefits of being well organised in order to make the most of this exciting Trans-Atlantic citybreak. There’s so much to see and do in Washington that it pays to arrive well rested, and BA Club Class certainly delivered on that score, while the 4* Washington Plaza was centrally located and ideally placed for sight-seeing.

Kate’s top tip is to kick off with a guided tour; a perfect way to get your bearings and learn something of the history of this great city. We all know that it was named after the first U.S. President George Washington but might just hesitate over where the ‘D.C.’ originates. In fact, it stands for ‘District of Columbia’ a federal district rather than a state and deriving from the feminine form of ‘Columbus’ which was historically a poetic name for the United States. Importantly, a guided city tour will also give you a feel for today’s Washington DC and its role as seat of government for the US.

The tour will also give you inspiration about places you’d like to visit again and explore at your leisure and what better way to do that than by hopping on and off the city’s delightful Old Town Trolley Tours?

Alison Hamilton joins a star-studded cast at the naming ceremony for the fabulous new MSC Bellissima.

When I try to choose some stunning little detail to illustrate the sense of style that permeates the new MSC Bellissima I have to admit I’m stumped. There are so many wonderful facets to this ship, that I just don’t know where to start.

So, as Julie Andrews would say, let’s start at the very beginning …

Anyone with a passion for cruising will already know about the near-legendary elegance of MSC Cruises. This is the world’s largest privately-owned cruise line and brand market leader in Europe, South America, South Africa and the Gulf, annually offering 2.4 million ship-board guests access to 212 fabulous cruise itineraries in 83 countries around the world. Much of MSC’s success lies in its unique combination of on-board style, attention to detail … and amazingly competitive pricing policies.

When MSC introduces a new cruise ship into service, all of us in the travel business sit up and take notice. This month I was amongst the Oasis Travel guests privileged to attend its star-studded naming ceremony for the new flagship MSC Bellissima, watching the magic unfold. (That’s me in the middle, with colleague Brian Gillespie, Oasis Travel MD, Sandra Corkin … overlooked by a Creature From The Deep!).

Every cruise ship has its own ‘godmother’, a woman selected to bring good luck and protection to the vessel, attending the ship’s launch and naming ceremony, where they bless and officially name the ship. The woman who has embraced the role for all the MSC ships is the stunning Sophia Loren so she was centre-stage at the event, holding court with breath-taking charm, a captivating smile and oozing that celebrated star quality.

The all-star line-up for MSC Bellissima’s naming ceremony in Southampton featured TV presenter Holly Willoughby, three-time Grammy award-winner Nile Rodgers and DJ Craig David. As if all that wasn’t enough to wow the guests, we were also treated to an exclusive Cirque du Soleil At Sea performance; a taster of two new shows, Varélia and Syma which will be showcased on the ship.

The razzamatazz around the naming of this superb ship is a reflection of the ethos which underpins everything at MSC; if a thing is worth doing, then do it well. My tour of MSC Bellissima convinced me that, yet again, MSC has got perfection in its sights.

MSC Bellissima prides itself on offering ‘a sophisticated blend of state-of-the-art technology and a love of passion for the sea, innovation, comfort and of course elegant design’. Accommodation is stylishly provided in 2217 cabins, 75% of which come with ocean views; 1250 cabins have balconies and, if you are really in the market for luxury, there are 48 suites, each of which boasts a whirlpool bath amongst its considerable attractions. The ship provides for a vast range of accommodation styles and price points and each offering is special in its own way, but all are well equipped and the décor throughout is refined and contemporary in style.

Anyone who follows MSC Cruises on social media will be familiar with the famous ‘Swarovski staircase’, a constant selfie spot for thousands of MSC guests every day. This spectacular tradition continues on board MSC Bellissima, where among the hustle and bustle of the atrium lie a dazzling set of six Swarovski staircases … 640 crystals adding sparkle to each step!

The ship’s huge Mediterranean-style indoor promenade, Galleria Bellissima, acts as the central social hub of the ship, linking many of the bars and speciality restaurants, and is home to an 80 metre LED sky that creates an awe-inspiring atmosphere 24 hours a day. With mesmerising shows three times a day, the promenade also hosts many of the ship’s themed parties, including White Night and Flower Glory.

Food, of course, plays an important role in shop-board life and here it is nothing short of outstanding. Guests can choose from 12 different dining venues, with a dazzling selection of complimentary, casual and specialty restaurants, showcasing something to suit every occasion and everyone’s palate. I was particularly impressed to see that menus cleverly offered wonderful fresh and simple options to suit what we in Northern Ireland tend to call ‘plain eaters’, as well as sophisticated choices to tempt the dedicated foodies amongst us!

For the first time, renowned German chef Harald Wohlfahrt (voted one of the Top 10 Chefs in the World and the only German chef to hold a 3* Michelin rating for 25 years in a row) has developed an exclusive menu for MSC Yacht Club guests, as well as two different main courses for Elegant Night in the ship’s main restaurants.

Two-time World Champion in Pastry, Jean-Philippe Maury, has also brought his internationally-acclaimed skills to bear, catering to everyone’s sweet tooth with two fabulous venues: Chocolat & Café which includes an open chocolaterie for guests to observe creations and show pieces being made live, and Crêpes & Gelato for on-the-go delights.

Add 20 different bars, all with their unique atmosphere and specialities, into the mix and you will genuinely be spoilt for gastronomic choice.

A family-owned company, MSC Cruises prides itself on the excellence of its family offering. The cruise line was voted ‘Best Cruise Line for Families’ by Cruise Critic in their Editors’ Picks Awards in 2017 and ‘Best Family Cruise Line’ in the 2018 Wave Awards. On board MSC Bellissima there is a brilliant range of events, attractions and entertainments that will keep kids of all ages amused, both with and without parents’ involvement (mums and dads need a break too!).

Those who prefer an adults-only ambience will be pleased to discover that the kids’ attractions are so well planned that there is no intrusion into the ‘grown up’ life of the ship.

On-board entertainment includes not only those wonderful Cirque du Soleil spectaculars, but also six different shows playing in the ship’s 985-seat West End style theatre and a guaranteed 300 hours of live music to enliven each and every cruise. There 210 activities scheduled each week for adults – and that’s before you look at the great shore excursions – so boredom is simply not an option!

My favourite? That would be strolling along the 96 metre promenade under a sparkling dome of twinkling LED lights!

To my mind, this ship really is the last word, as the choice of name indicates: Bellissima |bel’lis.si.ma| adjective – Possessing intense beauty; delighting the senses

Dare to be different

Adventure is on the itinerary for Peter Johnston as he explores the exotic cities of Marrakech and Essaouira as guest of Intrepid Travel.

Irresistibly exotic, Morocco has long been a powerful draw for travellers with a taste for adventure. Its cities and resort promise a thrilling contrast to Western life, and the reality more than lives up to high expectations.

I visited the Moroccan cities of Marrakech and Essaouira with the specialist company, Intrepid Travel, which caters for small groups in pursuit of big adventure. Intrepid offers more than 1,500 itineraries in over 120 countries and prides itself on providing insightful, real experiences for curious travellers. They use local guides and choose locally owned hotels so that the financial benefits of tourism flow back into the community.

For Intrepid and its travellers it’s all about tourism with a light tread. If you join one of their groups, you’ll find a strong emphasis on sustainability and respect … respect both for the environment and the local culture.

In Marrakech, our first stop was the Mogador Opera Hotel, situated in the ‘new town’ just ten minutes’ away from the central Medina, the densely packed walled city dating back to the highpoint of the Berber Empire in medieval times. The surroundings were extremely cosmopolitan with wide boulevards and western brands such as H&M, Zara and McDonalds, but the hotel itself has a very traditional vibe. I felt that, by western standards, it didn’t quite live up to its 4 star billing, but I was glad to stay somewhere so centrally located, with decent facilities and helpful local staff.

I was also extremely glad to be accompanied by Intrepid’s friendly and incredibly knowledgeable guide who proved an absolute treasure, steering us safely and relatively unhassled through the maze of alleyways and souks of the Medina. This characterful central area of Marrakech really is an assault on the senses; noisy, dusty, full of strange smells and sights and packed with people tugging at your sleeve an encouraging you to buy their goods.

The guide’s reassuring presence enabled us all to enjoy the colourful experience and relax into the (to us) uncomfortable art of bartering for everything we wanted to buy. Spices, pottery, gemstones, jewellery … and of course ‘genuine fake’ designer brands abound. We all succumbed to a bargain or two as we explored the souks, stopping here and there to enjoy incredible street food or imbibe coffee or mint tea, served to us in gilded coloured glasses. The experiences also helped the group to get and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, even in the hectic, heady city centre setting of Marrakech!

After two days in Marrakech, it was a transfer to the coastal resort of Essaouira where we stayed at the Riad Benatar, which was arguably a tad basic, but comfortable and very Moroccan in style and atmosphere. The hotel has a charmingly quirky feel about it and I have to say I loved its breakfasts, and would especially recommend its beautiful little spa where traditional massage is offered alongside a range of relaxing and re-energising treatments.

Intrepid’s travellers – and they come in all ages with the majority falling into the 45-50 bracket – can opt for the style of travel and accommodation which best suits their personal taste and budget. All have the air of authenticity which is a hallmark of the business, and all have been carefully chosen and assessed.

‘Basix’, as the name suggests offers basic accommodation, limited inclusions such as activities and meals and relies mainly of public transportation – perfect for an independently-minded traveller who likes the sociability and, perhaps, the security of a group.

‘Original’ which accounts for around 70% of the company’s trips, offers 3* accommodation and uses a mixture of public and private transportation to get around. More meals and activities are included.

‘Comfort’ is aimed at those who want a little more in the way of home comforts and expert escorting. It offers 4* accommodation, usually private transportation and most meals and activities are included.

After the mad rush of Marrakech, Essaouira seemed like a bit of a haven. There is a busy Medina area here too, but it’s not quite as bonkers as in Marrakech and Essaouira has the advantage of a great beach. It was nice to soak up the sunshine by the sea as well as soaking up the feel of Morocco in the souks and touring the sights.

There is a range of themes and special activities on offer with every style of holiday and, as I discovered, guides are great sources of inspirations for what to see and do in any location – often identifying fascinating opportunities and attractions which don’t necessarily figure in mainstream guide books.

Morocco is of course a Muslim country and it is important to respect their customs and traditions. Your guide will steer you, but as a general rule, you should dress modestly, particularly if you intend visiting places of worship. Respect people’s privacy and, if you want to take a photo, it’s only good manners to ask for and receive permission before you start snapping

Although the major cities here are fairly westernised, alcohol is not widely available. Neither of the properties we stayed at served alcoholic drinks but, if you search hard enough, some bars can be found serving a refreshing beer or two.

Ramadan is the fasting month for all Muslims. During this month no food, drink or smoking is permitted during daylight hours. While non-Muslims aren’t expected to fast, it’s recommended to try to avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours.

As a very positive footnote to my short break in Morocco, I was delighted to discover The Intrepid Foundation which provides travellers with an opportunity to give something back to the many wonderful communities visited by Intrepid Travel customers. By donating – even a small sum – travellers can make a difference in local communities, in health care, education, human rights, child welfare or the protection of wildlife and the environment. In Morocco, The Intrepid Foundation proudly supports the Horizon Association which builds prosthetics and wheelchairs for people with disabilities. The charity also provides day services and physical rehabilitation for children with mental and physical disabilities.

The world’s most anticipated cruise ship has finally taken to the ocean as the stunning, game-changing, Celebrity Edge sailed graciously into the new home of modern luxury – T25 Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Some of the cruise team at Oasis Travel have already enjoyed the privilege of attending previews and reveals about the amazing new ship and some of our (super lucky!) consultants jetted out to Florida for familiarisation tours. We asked what impressed them most as they got up close and personal with the awesome celebrity Edge …

Most frequently mentioned was the ship’s unique ‘magic carpet’ which glides from deck to deck in spectacular style. This stunning tennis court-sized deck juts out over the edge of the ship and can be raised and lowered to host everything from passenger embarkations and disembarkations at sea-level to chic cocktail parties13 storeys above sea level.

The Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda – it has an entire living space that transforms into an open-air veranda with the merest touch of a button.

Inspired – and inspiring – dining at sea. French, Greek, Italian, Fine Dining, Bistro, Steakhouse, casual … whatever your taste, whatever your mood, there’s a carefully considered and mouth-watering menu to suit.

Pier into Paradise

Ready to swap the winter blues for the blue skies and seas of the Caribbean? Angela Taylor from our Howard Street branch did just that recently as she visited St Kitts & Nevis as the (very privileged!) guest of Azure Collection … and it was luxury all the way

The Caribbean is of course hugely popular and high profile as a cruise destination, but there is also much to be said for opting for an island destination holiday which allows you to soak up the atmosphere as well as the sunshine. I chose to combine St Kitts and Nevis for my personal idyll of laid-back luxury … and it’s a combo I would heartily recommend to anyone wanting to relax, recharge and re-energise.

British Airways from operates a regular, not-quite-direct service from London Gatwick, touching down in Antigua for approximately one hour before passengers switch to the plane to St Kitts, a 20 minute hop away. From London to St Kitts takes around ten hours, a lot of travelling, particularly when you have to add the flight to London into the equation, so you may well feel that upgrading is worth the added investment. I certainly felt that flying BA Club Class made the journey feel like the holiday started as I checked into the well-equipped Club Lounge and looked forward to take off

On arrival, my party was formally met by the local tourist board and we were led straight into an executive room with air conditioning and a steel band playing, welcoming us to the island. A refreshing cold towel, along with a bottle of cold ‘Ting’ (the local grapefruit lemonade) went down well whilst waiting for our passports and immigration details to be checked. Excellent staff from St James Travel & Tours, identified our luggage and saw us safely off for our forty minute transfer to the Park Hyatt Hotel. I felt like travelling royalty!

The 5* resort-style Park Hyatt, on the delightfully named Banana Bay in the south of the island of St Kitts opened in October 2017 so everything is absolutely fresh and new. This is a large resort but, as rooms are thoughtfully laid out in blocks set in beautifully manicured gardens, the mood is of intimacy rather than large scale. Little golf buggies are readily available to transport guests from their rooms to all the facilities and restaurants of the hotel, and there’s a friendly smile and wave from all the drivers and staff as they pass by.

The Park Hyatt fully deserves its 5 star rating, with an excellent choice of accommodation styles.

For families I would particularly recommend the connecting rooms on ground floor close to the large family pool, itself designed with a clever beach-like ambience. The Beachside room options are on the ground floor level with a furnished terrace and just a short walk from the poolside – again perfect for families.

Children and infants are well catered for at meal times and there is a super children’s club for 3-12 year-olds, offering a good variety of activities throughout the day. Baby-sitting services can be arranged on request.

The Park Hyatt offers a range of accommodation styles and I found myself enjoying its Sea View category, fabulously well designed and open plan in style. The bedroom living area with bed, bath washbasin, rain shower (Bliss!) were all in one space, with a separate toilet adjoining. The room was finished to a very high standard, well air conditioned and facilities included an iron and board, Espresso Machine, complimentary water, hair dryer, 50” plasma television, bath robes, slippers, safe … even mosquito spray and cream. Perhaps best of all, you can literally have a bath in the most amazing tub, whilst looking out to the Caribbean Sea and views of Nevis.

For even more luxury, there is also a choice of gorgeous, beautifully-appointed suites, some of which have their own plunge pools!

The beautiful adults-only infinity pool with its breath-taking views of nearby Nevis island proved a hotel highlight, enhanced by charming pool staff who were constantly on hand with drinks, snacks and even a cooling frozen fruit stick as temperatures soar. Sun cream and complimentary water are thoughtfully placed beside each sun bed so that all you need to do is relax and enjoy!

Given its beachfront location, beach life is naturally very much part of the Park Hyatt experience. Crescent-shaped and sheltered, Banana Bay offers both motorised and non-motorised water sports and there are a number of fairly laid-back tours available to visitors – I’d particularly recommend the lovely journey to Salt Plage, 15 minutes’ away by water taxi. Costumed dancers meet the taxi and put on an amazing show for guests who revel in the lively atmosphere of this amazing Caribbean beach bar. Fab food, brilliant cocktails and a sunset that will live in your memory for ever!

Within the hotel complex itself there are plenty of activities on offer such as hiking, golf, tennis and yoga (which I really enjoyed). There is also an excellent spa. A charge is made for many of these activities.

The hotel offers a wide range of dining options, all spread out around the glorious gardens of the resort, so you really do feel you have a host of destinations within easy reach … and they are all super-accessible, since the buggy service will pick you up and take you where you want to go. Simply use the buzzer at your door and a friendly driver will soon be on your doorstep.

The Great House is at the heart of the resort and offers all day dining, with a stunning breakfast selection on offer. Choice really is the order of the day here, with all dietary requirements can be catered for and every type of milk imaginable. Fisherman’s Village down at the pier, served lunch and dinner, with fresh to the plate seafood its speciality offer. Seafood is a speciality here and I was told it was excellent!! The Stone Barn restaurant is adults only, with food is served from a hot hearth. Gastronomic perfection in a wonderful setting!

St Kitts is known for its rugged coastline, with small beaches seemingly hidden around every corner, and boasting very safe waters. This island is alive with Caribbean charm and local people who welcome and enjoy their visitors. You may arrive expecting the beautiful beaches and lush vegetation, but perhaps the island’s rich history will be more of a surprise. St Kitts once was the world’s leader in sugarcane cultivation and a visit to a plantation is an absolute ‘must do’. If you visit just one plantation make it Romney Manor which has acres of beautiful gardens to stroll around.

In my short time I also visited Brimstone Hill fortress, which was built as a look out for any unwelcome guests to the island. A bracing rum punch to helped us to hike to the top for stunning views. The 300-year-old Fairview Inn Greathouse, formerly once owned by a French family and now available to hire out for weddings or special occasions, is als well worth a visit.

Transfer to the nearby island of Nevis was via catamaran … a mini cruise in fact, complete with snorkelling, then sunbathing on deck, listening to music and, of course, having one or two Caribbean rum punches.

At the shortest point, Nevis is only two miles from St Kitts. There is even an annual swim between the two islands which is very popular with both locals and tourists alike; hundreds take part every year.

I stayed at the 5* Four Seasons Hotel for two nights, a beachfront resort with a delightful colonial feel to its elegant décor.

Just as before, I found myself in a delightful room, in one of several well-designed blocks of accommodation placed around beautifully maintained gardens and with a golf buggy service available for those not wishing to walk too far.

I was in an Ocean Front Room with pool and ocean view, a lovely choice and one which will be getting steadily lovelier in the coming months as the entire complex is benefiting from extensive renovation. The work is being sensitively handled, block by block, and I have to say I was totally unaware of any disruption. All is on schedule for completion by the end of 2018.

The resort takes full advantage of its fantastically lush location to invite its guests to reconnect with nature … you can even play golf alongside the mischievous local Green Vervet Monkeys or go horseback riding along the wonderful beach! Tennis facilities are great here too, and motorised and non-motorised sports are offered on the gorgeous beachfront, although I have to admit struggling to leave the beautiful loungers grouped there and around the resort pools (one for families and one for adults-only) in order to get active! This is the perfect place to relax and unwind and its wonderful spa completes that scenario!

Dining at the Four Seasons is wonderfully varied, whether you opt for a romantic private meal served on your own terrace, choose the Kastawey Bar for a casual toes-in-the-sand experience or go for fine local cuisine in the lovely waterside, open air Mango. Breakfasts are worth a special mention, for their combination variety and sheer visual impact … impossible to look at that choice each morning without saying ‘Wow!’

The Coral Grill offers a truly romantic setting with a great choice of fresh seafood and meats served indoors on the top floor of the Great House, while Veve is the perfect stop for burgers, wood-fired pizza or ahi-tuna tacos – a casual poolside restaurant, great for beach-day lunch breaks or sunset cocktails at the sit-down bar.

The Library Bar with its intimate, wood-panelled seating area is the place to meet up for pre-dinner cocktails, or you might indulge in a moonlit nightcap on the terrace at the elegant, British-style lobby bar.

All the resort bars are convivial and the perfect spot to sample local rums: you can become more expert in your select ions with a little help from resident ‘Rum-melier’ Mark Theron!

Given so much choice, it would be possible (delightful even) to stay within the resort, but Nevis is a beautiful and historic island and you ought not to leave without seeing something it its natural beauties and cultural and historic highlights. The main town of Charlestown is lovely, with plenty to occupy a visitor, and I would also recommend a visit to the nearby hot springs which locals believe offer great health benefits.

Actually I think that Nevis itself offers health benefits, for it is hard to imagine anywhere as naturally beautiful or with such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere … except perhaps St Kitts! These twin islands, together, make the perfect holiday destination.

Now finely tuned to luxury, I wasn’t disappointed on the return leg of my travels, checking into the Yu Lounge at St Kitts Airport. This is a stand-alone private terminal with bespoke fast track in and out of the Robert L Bradshaw International Airport. Here in the Yu Lounge you can relax in the Asian-style space, enjoying your champagne and canapés whilst staff manage your luggage and check-in, before being whisked to the steps of the waiting aircraft in a Porsche jeep!

What a final memory of two fabulous Caribbean islands!

Magnificent Mallorca

Mark Davidson revels in the understated luxury of one of the island’s favourite hotels, the ultra-charming Belmond La Residencia, a jewel of ‘the other Mallorca’.

Set in the town of Deià , nestling in the Tramuntana Mountain Range in Western Majorca, Belmond La Residencia has long been a favourite of those who know a thing or two about elegant hideaways.

One of the prestigious Belmond group of hotels, Belmond La Residencia is most definitely a five star experience … but so relaxed, chic and subtly-managed that you could easily imagine yourself staying in a grand private home.

Lying in the shadow of the Teix Mountain (part of the Serra de Tramuntana range) the impossibly pretty village of Deià is something of a millionaires’ hideaway, with some stunning residences. Visitors over the years have included Richard Branson, Princess Diana, Bob Geldof and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Perhaps its most famous resident was the English poet Robert Graves who made his home there in the 1930s. He died in Deià and is buried in the town’s little graveyard and his original home is now a museum.

Development has been tightly controlled, maintaining Deià’s traditional beauty and charm. The village has a slightly bohemian air and, alongside a fabulous selection of restaurants, you’’ find a number of art galleries and gift shops. Indeed, an artistic spirit permeates Belmond La Residencia. Pieces from the hotel’s private collection can be glimpsed in guest rooms or enjoyed in the sculpture garden while the hotel is delighted to arrange for its guests a tour of Deià with resident curator Cecilie Sheridan to discover its history and meet emerging artists.

History here is rich, with the name Deià (or the more anglicised ‘Deya’) dating back to the Moorish conquest of Mallorca, between the 10th and 13th centuries. The Moors created terraced irrigation systems for olive growing, still a major crop today, with olive trees covering the slopes round the town.

There is plenty to discover in Deià and the nearby towns of Valldemossa and Soller , exploring on foot or (even better!) by donkey which the hotel can organise for you, but it’s just as tempting to hole up in Belmond La Residencia, surrounded by luxury and five star service.

Belmond La Residencia was created from two manor houses, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, lovingly restored and furnished with local antiques and fabrics to create a hotel of unsurpassed style and charm.

Guests can choose from 71 elegant rooms and suites and one private villa, located across four different buildings, each unique and special in its own way. Never has the phrase ‘spoilt for choice’ been more apposite. All rooms and suites are exquisitely and tastefully decorated with Mallorcan antiques and local works of art and exude individual character. As you might expect of a hotel at this standard, he latest technology is offered in every room.
Situated right in the centre of Deià, Belmond La Residencia is an oasis of tranquillity, surrounded by stunningly lush and perfectly tended gardens and with fabulous views and aspects to enjoy. Those gardens sweep down to the wonderful main pool, but if you want to really chill out there is another adults-only pool at another level in the tiered gardens.

Food here is nothing short of amazing, yet unpretentious, joyously showcasing and celebrating local culinary traditions. Embark on a gastronomic journey in the fine-dining venue El Olivo or choose the breezy Café Miró, named after the display of 33 original Joan Miro paintings on display and offering Summer evening entertainment beneath the stars. The Pool Restaurant (Summer opening only) is another delightful, sun-splashed choice

Mediterranean buffet breakfasts are served in Son Fony, where tables overlook the main pool and offer tranquil views of the Tramuntana Mountains. Guests indulge homemade preserves, freshly baked breads and pastries, local seasonal fruits from the hotel’s orchard, fine Spanish Iberian hams and organic eggs … the perfect gastronomic start.

To say that I would unhesitatingly recommend Belmond La Residencia to my more discerning clients goes almost without saying … but the recommendation will come with a warning: you may never want to leave! However I’m assured that the prestigious Belmond Group has hotels right around the world, each exuding quality, style and elegance so there will always be more to see and experience, Belmond-style.

From Wine to Wildlife, Gardens to Gastronomy

African adventure beckons for Jennifer Ford from The Portfolio Suite as she visits the southernmost tip of the Dark Continent as a guest of Africa Collection, checking out some stunning hotels and picking up insightful advice for travelers who have The Garden Route of South Africa in their sights.

The first thing to think about in planning your South African adventure is timing, for the seasons are quite different from her own. Spring is September through to November; Summer runs from November to February; Autumn from March to May and June through August is their Winter.

We flew via London with South African Airlines which has just recently introduced a new A330 aircraft on the Heathrow to Johannesburg route. The configuration in business class (always a great start to a holiday!) was 1, 2, 1 with all seats forward facing and convertible into fully flat beds. South African Airlines has no dedicated business class lounge at Heathrow but offers a choice of three partner lounges Air Canada, United Airlines, or Singapore.

It is worth noting that on arrival in Johannesburg you have to clear customs, collect your bag from the carousel, and bag drop at the check in desk for the onward flight. It is possible to pre-book a ‘meet & assist’ and this is a service I would highly recommend this as the queue to clear customs can be very long and ‘meet & assist’ allows you to jump to the top of the queue, saving a lot of time and hassle and getting you where you need to be for any connecting flight. Otherwise you should allow a minimum of 3 hours to transit. The service cost £70 regardless of how many in your family. No landing cards required for South Africa.

South Africa is just an hour ahead of us time-wise, so no jet lag which is great, and they drive on the left making driving super-easy! If you choose to drive, possibly along the amazing Route 62, lined with wineries, do be careful to adhere to speed limits, for there are hidden speed cameras everywhere and you WILL be fined. It should go without saying that stopping off at wineries is wonderful, but sampling is a no-no if you’re the designated driver!

My first ‘port of call’ was Cape Town where everyone I met warned me that weather here changes dramatically and quickly. For that reasons it is a good tip to advise your clients to visit the iconic Table Mountain on arrival if the weather is good with good visibility, for you can’t be sure that will continue. A trip to the summit in the revolving cableway is a must.

Wonderful hotels abound in South Africa, as I was fortunate enough to experience with Africa Collection. Service is outstanding and the hotels I checked out all offered superb dining, complimented by (of course) those fantastic South African wines. I would suggest that, while it is tempting always to press on and see more, it is worth staying two nights rather than just one in any location – an overnight just gives you a taste while two nights allows you to savour your surroundings.

Here are just a few of the hotels which could make your South African trip extra-special …

The Table Bay Hotel , Cape Town. This award-winning five star hotel is part of the Sun International Group and was opened in May 1997 by former South African President, Nelson Mandela. It has a fabulous location, within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants and offering direct access to Cape Town’s renowned shopping district, the V&A Waterfront. It has beautiful views of the working harbour and Table Mountain or, from another perspective, across the Atlantic Ocean to Robben Island. Complimentary for in-house guests is a hop-on hop-off luxury shuttle service to and from Table Mountain, while guests can avail of a tailor-made tours service at The Table Bay’s Travel desk. As if all that (and wonderful rooms and ambiance too!) weren’t enough, it has what must surely be the best breakfast buffet in Cape Town!

Tintswalo Atlantic , just 45 minutes’ from the central V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, is the only lodge located in the Table Mountain National Park. This is a truly wonderful property, often described as ‘the most dramatic and romantic destination in Southern Africa’, the perfect place to rejuvenate and get away from the stresses and hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sitting at the foot of Chapman’s Peak, the lodge is perched on a pebble beach, and enjoys panoramic views of the dramatic Sentinel Mountain peaks, and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. The views from the wooden decks are truly memorable. The property has ten one-bedroom suites, all named after islands, and one two-bedroom villa. The board basis is bed and breakfast with lunch and dinner available. Widely known as Cape Town’s ‘hidden gem’, the hotel offers hiking trails and a variety of exciting excursions. It may not be for first-time visitors to Cape Town who will inevitably be intent on seeing as much as possible within their holiday time-frame, but for those who have perhaps been before and want to enjoy the stunning views and tranquillity this is an amazing choice.

The Robertson Small Hotel , two hours’ drive time from Cape Town underwent major renovation in 2016. The five star hotel has ten rooms, restaurant and bar, two pool areas, beautiful gardens, marvellous artwork throughout … and its very own cactus area! Accommodation options include four particularly lovely Pool Suites, with direct access to the pool. Décor is elegant and refined and worth highlighting is the EM Bar which serves a small range of tempting cocktails alongside a selection of local spirits and the valley’s finest wine from a custom bar in blue and white porcelain by artist Michael Chandler. It’s a destination best suits to adults and would be wonderful for honeymooners.

The Schoone Oordt at Swellendam (three hours’ from Cape Town and one hour from Robertson) is a charming country house hotel. Its ten bedrooms (sweetly quaint with half doors and cheerful long burning fires when you need them) are separate from the Manor House, all set in beautiful gardens, with saltwater swimming pool, and stunning conservatory restaurant. The emphasis here is on elegance and under-stated luxury, with every comfort considered – on arrival, for example guests are greeted with afternoon tea and freshly baked scones. Dining here was delightful, with the option to eat in the beautifully appointed dining room or outdoors on the patio.

La Plume at Oudtshoorn is a boutique guest house on a working ostrich, alfalfa and cattle farm. Its owners are very much hands-on and offer fascinating farm tours, making this a wonderfully family-friendly destination. A warm welcome awaits you at this charming 1902 Victorian homestead whose guest house has twenty beautifully appointed rooms and beautiful surroundings. The owners provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even picnic baskets which is a nice touch for those who choose to explore the area with its many attractions. The nearest airport, for those who want to start their trip in the middle of The Garden Route is George which is 50 minutes’ away.

Fancourt is a major and wonderfully family-friendly leisure resort situated in the heart of the Garden Route, 7 km from George Airport. Superbly landscaped on 613 hectares of lush countryside with the majestic Outeniqua Mountains as the perfect backdrop, the hotel has 115 rooms and its extensive leisure activities on the resort include a Spa with an indoor heated Roman Bath as well as a leisure centre which is home to the Kids Club. There is a teen lounge, gymnasium, cinema, indoor heated and outdoor swimming pool while outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy tennis, running/walking trails, bird watching and fishing and have a choice of three Gary Player designed golf courses all ranked in the Top 15 in South Africa as well as a Golf Academy. If you can tear yourself away, there are countless sightseeing excursions to the picturesque coastal towns of Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay as well as the historic town of Oudtshoorn.

Off again and, further along The Garden Route, we drove through the charming town of Knysna which is enormously popular with people from the interior of South Africa who flock here for their holiday. The leisure isle area is a haven for watersports and there is lots of really good accommodation to choose from.

The visitor is well catered for right along Route 62. We stopped off for example to enjoy lunch at The Lookout at Plettenberg Bay, justly popular with locals and visitors alike. The Lookout Deck offers uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean and Plett’s famous sunsets, making this a must for any visit to Plettenberg. Lovely relaxed atmosphere with great food – try the fresh oysters or go for a seafood platter! It was lovely to walk down steps from the Lookout and go for a walk along the stunning beach.

The Kurland Hotel is a boutique luxury hotel, set in a vast 700 hectare private estate. Family owned and operated, it is also very family friendly with just twelve super-comfortable suites. The open wood-burning fireplaces in all the guest rooms, restaurant, library, reception areas seal the deal on perfect warm welcomes, as does the Afternoon Tea & Cake on arrival. This is a great property for those interested in horse riding and a great place from which to explore.

We broke our hour drive from the gorgeous Kurland Hotel en route to Graaf Reinet with a lunch stop at the wondrously quirky Sophie’s Choice at Willowmore – another great example of the high quality hospitality trade which underpins the region’s tourism sector. Incredibly welcoming with yummy lunch and snack choices, this is a fab treasure trove of a place … a stopover here is like stepping back in time, for it is as much museum as restaurant with costumes adorning the walls, cabinets full of dolls, hats, and hat pins! Anybody visiting this area should surely stop for lunch.

The Drostdy Hotel is an iconic building in the impossibly pretty Graaff Reinet, one of the oldest towns in South Africa. A Cape Dutch building, originally built in 1806 as the local seat of government, this much acclaimed hotel has recently been refurbished to award-winning standard. It has just forty-eight rooms and is well known for its De Camdeboo Restaurant which serves a wide selection of delicious Eastern Cape fare and is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The hotel also has a world class ‘Africology Spa’, a choice of three pools set in immaculately manicured gardens, state of the art gym, and is home to The Imibala Art Gallery.

Nearby attractions make this a great place to spend a number of days … visit the Valley of Desolation in Camdeboo National Park whose national beauties virtually surround the town of Graaff Reinet … experience life as it was in the 1800’s with a tour of the historical Reinet House, Old Residency Museum, Urquhart House and the Military Museum … or simply take time to admire he architecture of the Dutch Reformed Church here, the Groote Kerk. The town contains over 220 heritage sites – more than any other town in South Africa.

Never having done a safari before I was beyond excited at the prospect of staying at The Samara Private Game Reserve … and it more than lived up to my expectations! Located 20 km southeast of Graaff-Reinet in the Camdeboo region of the Eastern Cape, the reserve stretches from the top of the Karoo Mountain Complex, down into the extensive plains characteristic of the area. Samara Private Game Reserve is a luxury safari destination, family owned, with great emphasis on conservation and making all guests part of the Samara family. Children are very welcome and receive a welcome pack on arrival, but this is a destination that made children of us all as we spotted giraffe, vervet monkeys, springbuck, kudu, oryx, cheetah, yellow mongoose, warthog to name but a few. Our excitement was off the scale!

Since it was winter the game drives were chilly, but the lodge provided hot water bottles, blankets, and capes to keep us warm and somehow that all added to the fun and enjoyment of the trip. I was really surprised at how comfortable the landrover was and really enjoyed driving around looking at the amazing scenery and mountain backdrop, never mind the game.I would describe this as a safari on a small scale and its intimacy really appealed to me.

We had rooms in The Lodge which was really nice and convenient when going for breakfast and dinner while some other guests from the group I travelled with were accommodate in the Karoo with stunning views overlooking a watering hole. I would recommend three nights – two nights is too short and four nights is possibly too long. Expect the experience of a lifetime.

Hacklewood House Hotel in Port Elizabeth, was a four hour drive further along the Route – a pretty and relaxing boutique style hotel with nice gardens and swimming pool, located away from the waterfront beach area. Pleasant and easy-going with good service, it was a good choice at the end of the trip.

I would suggest that Kenton-on-Sea, more commonly known as Kenton, the small coastal town on the Sunshine Coast, in the Eastern Cape might also be a good spot in which to wind down at the end of a driving holiday, re-charging before the flight home.

South Africa truly is a ‘world in one country’ from cosmopolitan Cape Town to the magic of the African bush, offering hotel hospitality and service which, to my mind, is second to none, particularly when you travel in the company of renowned specialists, Africa Collection. My advice, if you are thinking about it as a destination, is to stop thinking and start packing! Give me a call to find out more and plan your own drive along the wonderful Garden Route.

Dubai: Where Dramatic Desert Meets Sensational Skylines

When it comes to escapist breaks, Dubai i s very much front of mind. Its great weather guarantee, fantastic hotels, stunning setting and general good value make this exotic destination a firm favourite with all sorts of people.

Of course it wasn’t always that way, for Dubai is a relative newcomer to the international tourism scene, with much of its development taking place in less than twenty-five years. Perhaps because of that sensational desert-to-destination growth spurt, Dubai has a truly dynamic personality and there is a fabulous energy about the place.

I flew into the city with Emirates from Newcastle – a quick and efficient gateway for travellers from Belfast and the flag-carrier airline certainly gave its passengers an advance taste of the contemporary luxury which we tend to associate with Dubai.

Luxury lifestyle became a bit of a theme during my short stay, as I checked into and checked out some fantastic accommodation in the city.

My first night was spent at Address Dubai Marina which overlooks the world’s largest man-made marina and waterfront development … to say the views are stunning falls far short of the spectacle which awaits you here; fascinating by day and truly glorious by night! The hotel is beautifully appointed with absolutely everything you could want in terms of creature comforts, and its location makes it a perfect choice for exploration and also as a first stop for those, like me, planning to board one of the gorgeous liners moored close by.

I boarded the MSC Fantasia in Dubai Port and, although, I wasn’t lucky enough to be sailing (not this time anyway!) I did have an opportunity to see around the ship and get a sense of what is on offer. MSC has a fantastic programme of cruises in the Middle East and beyond and the passengers I spoke to were all thrilled with their experiences both on board and at the fascinating ports of call in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Shore excursions on offer are varied and take in not only the major tourism highlights of each destination, but also give an introduction to local culture and colour. If you prefer to stay on board …. well, there’s still plenty to do. I chatted with some guests who were enjoying the view of the Dubai skyline while revelling in the on-deck hot tub and imbibing a few cocktails. What’s not to love, eh?

Understated elegance is the order of the day on board the Fantasia, with rich contemporary décor and the excellent guest facilities and amenities (including a brilliant live entertainment programme) we have all come to expect from MSC Cruises, including some wonderful fine as well as casual dining.

On, then to the world’s tallest hotel, the JW Marriott Marquis , located in the prestigious Business Bay, with absolutely breath-taking views across the city and a truly 5 star sophistication which harnesses the latest technology to ensure perfect comfort for its guests.

Bedrooms and suites are spectacularly well fitted with décor that could grace the cover of any style magazine and marble bathrooms which feature lighted makeup mirrors, rain showers and luxury toiletries. The hotel has superb business facilities, making it hugely popular with the jet setting corporate market, but it’s equally suitable for affluent leisure travellers who appreciate the finer things of life.

If your taste for the good life includes dining, you will be spoilt for choice here, with a range of restaurants which include everything from Japanese, Thai and a Steakhouse to a Peruvian restaurant and – of course – one which majors on Middle Eastern cuisine.

Around 90 per cent of Dubai’s population actually come from outside the United Arab Emirates so this is an overwhelmingly cosmopolitan capital and that diversity is joyously reflected in the vast range of international eateries in the city. It’s also reflected in the shopping. Historically traders from all around the Middle East came to sell their wares in the souks around Dubai Creek (try traveling here by abra, the traditional local boat). Today you can still buy turquoise from Iran, silver treasures Oman, dates from Saudi Arabia, pearls from Bahrain …. And, when you move into the city’s marvellous air conditioned malls you’ll find the world’s biggest brands jostling for position and tempting you with great offers! Retail here is fantastic; Dubai even has a spectacular souk, totally dedicated to gold.

Wonderful though the shopping is, there is much to see and do in Dubai. Even on a short trip you’ll want to take in some of the highlights. The major must-do experiences are, of course, a trip to the Observation Deck of the world’s tallest building, The Burj Khalifa ; a stroll around the cultural riches on display at the Dubai Museum, an admiring visit to the city’s amazing Aquarium , and, perhaps a fantasy afternoon at IMG Worlds of Adventure , Dubai’s largest indoor theme park.

There are countless unusual experiences awaiting you in Dubai, from flying kites on Kite Beach to snowboarding at Ski Dubai (honestly!), but I would heartily recommend a desert safari. For me this was a real highlight of the trip, a chance to become a true Lara Croft, racing over the sands in search of adventure and excitement!

I would also encourage a visit to the Dubai Fountain Show , a dazzling display of dancing water fountains and the most magical son et lumiere show I have witnessed anywhere in the world.

Submerged within the 30-acre Burj Lake, at the foot of The Dubai Mall, over an area the size of two football pitches are hidden fountains which spring into life nightly sending jets of up to 22,000 gallons of water as high as 140m in the air at any one time. Each colourful, illuminated jet sways and dances in time to music, in the carefully choreographed production which has become the most popular show in Dubai.

This being Dubai, the show includes the tallest performing fountain in the world and the five circles of jets which shoot water high into the skies can be seen from over 30km away. Best seats from which to enjoy the spectacle? That will be on board the new Dubai Fountain Lake Ride which sails during the show, but the Dubai Fountain Boardwalk also offers an amazing up close and personal experience as visitors stroll on the 272m floating platform which is just nine metres away from the fountains.

While the United Arab Emirates is of course a Muslim country, it’s not as conservative as some might expect and dress codes tend to be relaxed – reasonably modest holiday-wear being the norm, with a requirement to be particularly respectful when visiting holy sites and locations … your guide will advise.

There are plenty of organised tours and excursions on offer, but it is also easy to go it alone here, using the excellent metro system or simply hopping into a cab. Throughout the region the sale of alcohol is limited to within hotel restaurants, bars and clubs and excessive drinking is very much frowned upon.

Above all, Dubai is a tourist-friendly destination which extends a warm welcome to its many visitors, casting a magical spell which I certainly found impossible to resist. I’m already planning my next trip!

Ciao, Sardinia … and Arrivederci!

Mark Davidson from Oasis Travel in Howard Street fell under the spell of the magical island of Sardinia when he visited as guest of the superbly stylish Azure Collection.

The stunning Costa Smerelda on the northern shores of the enchanting island of Sardinia has long been a favourite destination of the Jet Set and no hotel captures the essence of luxury like the uber-gorgeous Relais Villa Del Gofo, winner of the Conde Nast Luxury Award last year.

This is an amazing property, sensitively designed to echo the traditional architectural styles of a typical Sardinian village, and cleverly built into the hillside in order to take full advantage of its fabulous location overlooking the stunning Bay of Cannigione.

To say I loved this hotel is an under-statement, but I should perhaps admit from the outset that it isn’t for everyone. Its hilly location means that it just wouldn’t work for anyone with mobility issues and it doesn’t have its own beach so guests must choose from a sunbathing platform on the water’s edge a few minutes’ walk downhill or opt for one of the nearby beaches where the hotel has facilities for guests.

The ambiance here is best suited to those with a taste for authentic setting and understated elegance and the really good news is that it is surprisingly well priced in comparison with some of its competitors. Meals and drinks are actually in line with UK prices, if not slightly cheaper, which is particularly good news for holidaymakers.

The accommodation choice at the Hotel Villa Del Golfo ranges from standard doubles to private suites with their own plunge pools or a separate three-bed villa, each decorated in simple yet elegant Sardinian style and all incredible views. The hotel has its own small spa with an indoor swimming pool.

The hotel’s excellent restaurant is the MiraLuna, renowned for its grill and super-fresh fish and seafood, but you would be missing a trick if you didn’t use your stay in Cannigione to discover some of the region’s wonderful eateries, indulging in Sardinian specialities. One not to be missed dining experience is at La Colti, which is the hotel’s private farmhouse, serving up fresh, organic, local Sardinian fayre in a family-style setting … a step back in time, with a traditional dinner under the Sardinian stars!

The town of Cannigione with its bars, restaurants and small shops is a pleasant 15 minutes’ stroll away but I would recommend hiring car so that you can explore the wider area, discovering the delightful coves along the coastline and finding out a little more about the region’s rich culture and history.

Cannigione itself is a characterful little destination, with an attractive seafront area where you can enjoy an Italian Gelato or a cold drink and simply watch the world go by. Fishing was once the main activity here, but today tourism is at the heart of the local economy and the boats in harbour are more likely to be hired out for leisure cruising than busy fishing. From the port boat tours are available to of the island of Caprera, to the Maddalena Arcipelago, stopping at the Manto della Madonna (Cloak of the Virgin Mary), or taking in the dramatic coastline of the Costa Smeralda, stopping at the Island of Mortorio.

The pace of life is laid back here, but never boring. The area has plenty to intrigue the curious traveller and lots to delight the hedonistic. Villa Del Golfo is also one of those rare hotels which you simply don’t want – or even need – to leave in search of diversion. On request, cooking classes and wine tastings can be arranged and I found hotel staff wonderfully helpful in helping to plan excursions, advise on shopping trips, recommend restaurants … even organising diving!

Flights operate to the Northern Sardinian airport of Olbia through Manchester or London where a good connection can be made with BA over Terminal 5 in the high season. This was my first visit to Sardinia, but I am already determined that it won’t be my last and I will certainly be recommending it to my clients as a stylish escape

The Cream of the Channel Islands

Melanie Tomlinson explores the lovely island of Jersey as a guest of Travel Solutions

If you love to travel but hate the faff, there are few destinations to match Jersey. Easy and fast to get to … manageable size to explore … no language barrier … great climate … an island famous for its wonderful cuisine, plus an ambience that, largely due to the island’s location in the Bay of St Malo, has more than a hint of the ‘ français ’ about it.

I’ve been recommending Jersey for years to people who are looking for hassle-free holidays, but it actually took a familiarisation trip with Channel Island experts, Travel Solutions, to open my own eyes to the holiday potential of this totally charming island. Easy, accessible, temperate and English-speaking it may be, but that doesn’t mean bland!

Jersey is the biggest of the Channel Islands, but it is still just 5 miles long and 9 miles wide – small but, as they say ‘perfectly formed’! It enjoys the warmest summers and the mildest winters in the British Isles and its gorgeous coastline has some stunning (and super-clean) beaches as well as delightful coves. Its strategic position between England and France mean that the island has had a turbulent history and, if exploring castles and forts is your thing, you won’t go short here!

Modern history awaits the curious visitor, too, and I would heartily recommend a visit to the Jersey War Tunnels, the vast network of underground tunnels built by more than 5,000 slave labourers during the Nazi occupation of the island. Initially designed to allow the German occupying infantry to withstand Allied air raids and bombardment in the event of an invasion, in 1943, the tunnel network was converted into an emergency hospital. This is a fabulous visitor resource, revealing stories of hardship, privation and courage and giving a memorable insight into the character of Jersey’s redoubtable island community. Liberation Day is celebrated every May 9th, making this a great time to visit Jersey.

In early August each year visitors also flock to the island for the famous Battle of the Flowers which just has to be one of the most spectacular carnivals in Europe! Flower covered floats, musicians, dancers and entertainers create an amazing atmosphere and remind us that flower growing is actually a major industry here. It’s all a bit mad: Chelsea Garden Show meets Mardi Gras … one not to miss, if you can arrange your holiday timing to suit. There is also a wonderful Christmas Festival so do consider Jersey for an off-beat winter break … or perhaps you’re come for the Film Festival or the Live Music Festival – there’s always something special happening.

They (mercifully) drive on the same side of the road as we do, so hiring a car is easy-peasy and, to my mind, well worth doing so that you explore the real Jersey beyond the main resorts and the capital, St Helier. There are 350 miles of road here and the top speed limit is 40mph, so perhaps this is the moment to think about cycling.

Jersey has fabulous local produce, from Jersey Cream Teas and ice cream to Jersey Royal potatoes, great local cider (yes, there’s a Cider Festival too!) and amazing seafood. Cafes and restaurants about and the island offers superb, high-end fine dining, reflecting the fact that this is still a tax haven, with a wealthy clientele. Not surprisingly, there is also fab shopping and those who love their retail therapy will be interested to learn that Jersey has no VAT, just a Goods and Services Tax (GST) which currently stands around 3%. Just sayin’.

So where to stay? I checked out range of hotels with Travel Solutions and would be confident in saying that there really is something for everyone, plus the company often has really good package deals on offer, direct from Belfast with flight time of just 1 hour and 20 minutes.The 4 star Pomme D’Or Hotel overlooking St Helier’s Liberation Square and yacht marina, is perfectly situated and just a short stroll away from the capital’s many attractions. Its Victor Huge Suite offers ultimate luxury with service to match, but I was also impressed at its great family rooms. Great catering here, too, with the emphasis on local, seasonal produce and frankly inspired menus. Breakfasts are super-hearty and the hotel’s Friday Night Seafood Buffet is (justifiably!) something of a local legend. The Merton Hotel at St Saviour is actually a full-on resort, perfect for energetic young families, but ideal for a couples retreat too … it has the space and the facilities to suit all comers! Self-catering options invite guests to enjoy the freedom and privacy of an apartment with all the convenience of a hotel, while the hotel itself has a good range of modern, comfortable and well-equipped rooms to suit couples, friends and families. It’s the facilities which give The Merton its standout appeal, with Aquadome and FlowRider, Fitness Centre, Sports Facilities and even its own live entertainment Centre, the Star Room. The resort’s eateries are just as varied and exciting, from classic Italian to great American classics at Jersey Joe’s!

Close to the beach, shops, bars and restaurants of St Helier, The Mayfair Hotel has a wide range of services, facilities and entertainment, including Health Club, Games Room and a Kids’ Club. Its traditionally-presented junior suites and bedrooms offer rather more in style and substance that its 3 stars might suggest and service is warm and friendly. Nice, vibrant, lounge bar with regular entertainment and a cheerful, airy, cafe, indoor pool and pleasant rooftop terrace all ensure that this is a hotel which really pulls in the repeat bookings – always a good sign!

The family-owned and run 2 star Norfolk Hotel is a super budget option; clean and comfortable and offering its guests a good (and heated!) outdoor pool and a pool room. Just minutes’ walk from St. Helier’s town centre, Havre des Pas beach and the beautiful Howard Davis Park, the hotel is an excellent choice for families on a budget, with everything you’d expect from a well-run hotel plus a few extra touches and a genuinely friendly atmosphere.

Spice it up in Grenada

Melanie Tomlinson from our Holywood branch hot-foots it to the sun-kissed ‘spice isle’ of Grenada in the Caribbean, travelling with The Inspiring Travel Company and Virgin Atlantic

Spice crops have been at the heart of Granada ’s culture and economy for more than a hundred years, (the nutmeg even features on the national flag), but these days you can add luxury tourism to the mix.

I travelled with The Inspiring Travel Company which created a truly inspiring four night fact-finding trip. It seems a lot to cram into a short time but, as I discovered, Grenada is eminently do-able in even that short time span. I flew with Virgin Atlantic London to St Lucia, then made the relatively short hop to the Maurice Bishop International Airport on Grenada. If I were planning a holiday I would definitely look at using this service but making it a twin centre break, taking in the charms of both St Lucia and Grenada. However it is also possible to fly direct from London to Grenada with BA.

I left London on a typically damp and dismal day and arrived in Grenada to stunning sunshine and a totally different vibe … the tropical setting, the glorious coastline and the wonderful weather provide an instant feel-good factor, boosted still further by the high standards which prevail in the island’s beautiful hotels. Grenada was completely untouched by the recent hurricane which devastated so many of the other islands in this part of the Caribbean and its tourism industry is flourishing.

My first stop was the six star, all inclusive, Spice Island Beach Resort, owned and managed by Sir Royston Hopkin and his extended family: a major force in shaping the high standards which prevail across Grenada’s hospitality sector.

Set on the beautiful Grand Anse Beach with access to more than two miles of golden sands, the resort is visually stunning and oozes elegance. Given the attention to detail and the exceptional customer service offered here, is isn’t hard to see why there is such a huge repeat clientele. The staff are wonderfully attentive, yet always unobtrusive, emerging at just the right moment with those cool towels, refreshing drink or fruit kebabs. It may all appear effortless and laid-back, but I pay full tribute to the management skills which create this perfection!

I stayed in a ‘Sea Grape’ ocean-front room just steps from the beach … and of course I had my very own hammock, perfectly positioned to take full advantage of that spectacular sea view. The beach along this stretch is open to the public, but little used by locals.

Entertainment is low key with a weekly BBQ and manager’s cocktail party complete with Caribbean Steel Band … all very laid back and pleasant. Relaxation is very much the name of the game here so I took full advantage of the luxurious Janissa’s Spa on-site.

Food is (or should be) a holiday highlight and the Spice Island Beach Resort certainly didn’t disappoint, from the extensive buffet breakfast (with waiters on hand to carry your plate back to the table for you, of course!), to light and creative lunches with the emphasis on fresh local produce. Dinners are quite formal affairs, with five carefully selected and beautifully prepared courses – well worth lingering over. If you fancy something that isn’t already on the menu or have special dietary requirements, staff will be only too happy to cater to your specific needs.

While at Grand Anse Beach I took the opportunity to set the flip flops and sunglasses aside to don hard hat and steel toecap boots for a site visit to the new Silver Sands Hotel , still under construction and due to open later this year.

It was still very much a construction site, but it was clear that this is set to be something ultra-spectacular. On completion it will have the largest pool in the Caribbean and its design and layout take full advantage of its beautiful sea-front location.

I also visited Coyaba Beach Resort, set on Grand Anse Beach just along from Spice Island Beach Resort. All-inclusive, this resort is particularly affordable and well suited to families and those in pursuit of value.

Accommodation features natural wood and colourful accents, with modern amenities as balconies or patios. Upgraded rooms have sea views. There are two restaurants and three bars, including a swim-up bar at the outdoor pool. A gym, a spa and a tennis court are available, and there’s also an on-site dive centre.

I spent two glorious nights at the Calabash Luxury Boutique Hotel & Spa , the famously elegant intimate resort owned and managed by the Garbutt family and part of the Relais & Chateaux grouping of outstanding hotels worldwide. Fronted by lovely gardens overlooking a horseshoe bay dotted with small yachts and private homes, this is a spot brim-ful of understated charm: a perfect holiday retreat. The hotel offers a choice of B&B or Half Board.

Relax in the infinity pool, revel in a spa treatment or try your hand at scuba diving or (as I did) paddle boarding or head off in search of turtles on a snorkelling trip at the onsite water sports centre … there is plenty to do and all day to do it! If you feel like exploring check out the West Indies Craft beer bar just a few minutes’ taxi ride away from the Calabash, with fab beers and ciders on sale and local bands adding to the atmosphere. There’s evening entertainment within the hotel too, low key with a weekly cocktail party.

Breakfast can be served at the beach club with your feet in the sand or, if you prefer, delivered to your terrace or balcony and served, complete with white linen tablecloth, on your private table …an amazing treat and I can think of no better way to start the day than with a beautiful view of lush tropical gardens leading to seascape beyond and with birds providing the musical accompaniment.

Complimentary canapes are delivered each evening to your terrace or balcony … and, for a small extra charge, you can add a mood-enhancing pre-dinner glass of something perfectly chilled alongside; a great start to memorable dining at one of the hotel’s two renowned restaurants, The Beach Club and Gary Rhodes Restaurant.

Not yet content with all that luxury I also found time to fit in a brief tour of LaLuna Hotel , a beachfront Balinese-style property adored by travellers for its emphasis on intimate, relaxed getaways. There is a romantic 16-cottage boutique hotel and adjacent, you’ll find the Laluna Estate with its luxury villas.

No one word encapsulates the visitor offer here, for the hotel is at once bohemian and luxurious … in a laidback, eco-friendly style. Known for its beach yoga pavilion and unique Asian spa, the venue blends Balinese, Caribbean, and Asian influences with some terrific Italian dining. Think ‘fusion’ and you’ll be on the right track. I loved the friendly personality of this very special retreat.

‘Friendly’ is the perfect word for Grenada, for I found a warm welcome at every turn. It is a truly lovely Island, with rather more to see and do than in many other ‘paradise islands’. The capital, St Georges, is charming it itself but it also offers some standout activities … from here you can, for example, drive to see an underwater sculpture park , while the Grenada National Museum will give you a valuable insight into the history of the island and its people.

Inland, visit some magnificent natural waterfalls and enjoy marvellous landscapes but, whatever you do, be sure to visit one of the many spice gardens and nutmeg factories in Grenada. You may be surprised to see for yourself the exotic origins of the many spice powders which we all have in our larders … and this is a taste or Grenada which you can bring home as a souvenir!

When Life Gives You Lemons…

Jennifer Ford from our Portfolio Suite in Howard Street, Belfast visits Sicily, famously dubbed ‘the land of lemons’, as guest of Kirker Holidays.

The gloriously scented lemon groves which colour the beautiful Sicilian landscape add zest to its culture, cuisine and economy. This is a truly beautiful, largely rustic, island destination, dotted with remote and exceptionally pretty villages, set against the amazing backdrop of snow capped Mount Etna .

Visitors are very much welcomed with a charming, relaxed spirit of hospitality. If you enjoy wining and dining … chatting with locals … stunning scenery and wonderful weather … exploring history and heritage … and absorbing another culture, Sicily is made for you.

Hotels reflect a preference for authentic style and traditional cuisine and many are either family-owned or are owned and managed by heritage hotel specialists.

My introduction to Sicily was enhanced by a wonderful guide whose mother actually wrote the definitive ‘ Blue Guide To Sicily’ . Having a private guide gave tremendous insight in to every aspect of Sicily and it’s something I would heartily recommend to travellers, partly because guides are plentiful on the island and their services well placed, but not least because driving here is so fraught. Cars are more abandoned than parked!

Amongst the fascinating facts imparted by guide Diana (whose twin brother is also a guide in the family tourism business) is that few Sicilians have freezers; they prefer to buy fresh produce daily. The local electricity supply can also be a tad unreliable and using a couple of major household appliances at one time can trip the system! I also learned that many Sicilians eat gelato con brioche for breakfast and think it quite strange that anybody should want eggs . All I can say is “when in Rome”…..

I had the opportunity during my short stay to check out four very different hotels in key Sicilian resorts and would recommend all without question.

The Hotel Frederico II (refer to it as ‘Frederico Secundo’ if you wish to impress!) is a four star boutique-style hotel in the heart of the Sicilian capital of Palermo , perfectly positioned to dander out to enjoy the nearby café society and shopping and just a 6-minute walk from the Teatro Massimo auditorium and 2.1 km from 9th-century Palazzo dei Normanni – two of the city’s key visitor attractions. Elegant, under-stated rooms feature marble bathrooms and come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and minibars. Suites add second bathrooms and living areas; some have terraces. Room service is available.

In the town of Sciacca , I stayed at the five star Verdura Resort . Occupying almost two kilometres of private Mediterranean coastline, the resort is home to three excellent golf courses, a 60 metres infinity pool, six clay tennis courts, a world-class spa, four restaurants and five stylish bars plus excellent children’s facilities … an irresistible combination!

The whole resort has been tastefully designed and accommodation is cleverly and subtly women into the natural landscape. All rooms are luxurious and have a terrace with a view towards the sea. This would be a fantastic place to base yourself in the height of the season when Sicily can become tremendously hot and sight-seeing is arguably best left to late afternoon and early evening! Perfect place to chill out and relax or be energetic if I choose.

Next to the great resort of Taormina , lovely in itself but also a fabulous base for exploring lovely hilltop villages such as the nearby Castelmola or for taking the fascinating, must-do, visit to Mount Etna. The snow-capped mountain which is such a striking backdrop to much Sicilian scenery is Europe’s tallest active volcano and erupts frequently. Look carefully and you will see, even from a distance, little plumes of smoke rising from vent holes.

Taormina is a bustling hubbub of a town, just perfect for strolling and taking in the general ambience. Fantastic eateries – but, then, everywhere seems to be great for eating out in Sicily! Fine dining reveals wonderful menus (look out for the local version of Caprese Salad with wonderful Buffalo Mozzarella) but casual dining is superb too, whether you stop for a coffee and canoli (those Sicilian speciality, cream-filled pastry rolls which feature so often in The Sopranos on TV) or sampling a super-cooling crystalline Granita, another local speciality: this time a semi-frozen concoction of sugar and water flavoured with fruit – usually lemon.

Not altogether surprisingly lemon features in another much loved local delicacy, the liqueur Limoncello while, on the road to Mount Etna, I even had the opportunity to enjoy local honey from bees who collected their pollen from lemon blossom.

I adored the Grand Hotel Timeo which is quite simply one of the nicest hotels that I have ever had the privilege of staying in – beautifully and tastefully furnished with some lovely finishing touches. To sit and have breakfast on the fabulous terrace with spectacular views over the bay of Naxos with snow-capped Mount Etna as a backdrop was truly amazing. (Earlier this year, for the first time in many, many years Taormina town had snow which was greeted as a wonderful novelty by the locals!). The hotel is also next to the Greek amphitheatre and within walking distance of shops and restaurants … ‘convenient’ doesn’t adequately describe it!

Sicily is a truly wonderful destination, well served by Ryan Air flights from Dublin to Palermo and Aer Lingus into Catania. Choose any destination or mix and match – and you are sure to fall in love with this charming, lemon-filled isle!
